Oil on canvas, 17 x 11

In the Haida culture of the Pacifc Northwest,
the Salmon was understood to be a sentient being,
which willingly gave itself to humans
as long as they were treated with respect.
The salmon was often represented on totem poles.

Joseph Campbell taught that the salmon was a meaningful
image in the cultures of the indiginous peoples of the Northwest
representing the renewal of life
and a life-force of nature.
